L e s Q u e s t i o n s - A s k i n g Q u e s t i o n s
There are several ways to ask questions in French:
I. | Raise the pitch of your voice at the end of any normal sentence (familiar)
Tu danses ? | You dance? | |
II. | Add the tag n'est-ce pas to the end of the sentence (familiar)
Tu danses, n'est-ce pas ? | You dance, right?
III. | Put est-ce que at the beginning of any sentence (formal/familiar)
Est-ce que tu danses ? | Do you dance?
IV. | Use inversion: invert the verb and subject pronoun, join by a hyphen (formal/familiar)
Danses-tu ? | Do you dance? |
Note when using inversion: if you are using the third person singular (il or elle) and the verb ends in e, you have to add -t- between the verb and subject pronoun:
Aime-t-il les films ? - Does he like movies?
These are all yes/no questions. For other questions, you need to use one of the following:
Interrogative pronouns (qui/que/quoi)
Interrogative adjectives (quel/quelles)
Interrogative words (quand, oł, etc.)
